About the Kentucky Real Estate Exam

The Kentucky real estate licensing exam is administered by PSI Services on behalf of the Kentucky Real Estate Commission (KREC). Kentucky uses the title sales associate for its entry-level license (not "salesperson"). Before sitting for the exam, candidates must complete 96 hours of KREC-approved pre-license education. After passing both sections, candidates must submit a completed license application to KREC within 60 days of passing. Kentucky does not offer online exam proctoring — all candidates must test in person at a PSI testing center.

The exam consists of 130 scored multiple-choice questions: 80 on national content (150 minutes) and 50 on Kentucky-specific law (90 minutes). The questions are intermixed throughout the exam — not presented in separate sections — though they are independently scored. A passing score of 75% is required on each section. If a candidate fails one section but passes the other, they only need to retake the failed section within 4 months.

Sample Kentucky Real Estate Exam Questions

1. Kentucky uses the title "sales associate" for entry-level licensees. After passing the exam, a Kentucky sales associate must submit their license application to KREC within:

  • A. 30 days
  • B. 90 days
  • C. 60 days
  • D. 6 months
Correct: C. After passing both sections of the Kentucky real estate licensing exam, a candidate must submit a completed license application to KREC within 60 days of the date they passed the exam. The application must include the exam score report, proof of education, and other required documentation. Missing the 60-day deadline means the candidate must retake the exam. Kentucky's 60-day application window is a frequently tested state-specific requirement.

2. Under Kentucky law, a real estate sales associate who fails the state portion of the licensing exam but passes the national portion must:

  • A. Retake both the national and state portions together
  • B. Wait 6 months before attempting either section again
  • C. Retake only the state portion within 4 months
  • D. Complete additional pre-license education before retaking
Correct: C. Kentucky allows candidates who pass one section but fail the other to retake only the failed section. If a candidate fails the state portion but passes the national portion, they need to retake only the state portion. The failed section must be retaken within 4 months of the initial attempt. If the failed section is not retaken within 4 months, the candidate must retake both sections.

3. Kentucky's license law requires a real estate licensee's advertising to comply with which of the following requirements?

  • A. All advertising must be pre-approved by KREC before publication
  • B. Advertising may only appear in Kentucky-published newspapers and magazines
  • C. All advertising must clearly identify the brokerage firm under which the licensee is licensed
  • D. The licensee's personal license number must appear in all advertising
Correct: C. Kentucky KREC regulations require all real estate advertising by licensees — including online listings, social media posts, business cards, and yard signs — to clearly identify the name of the brokerage firm (the principal broker's business) under which the licensee is licensed. Advertising that presents the individual sales associate as an independent operator without identifying the brokerage violates KREC advertising rules.

Study Tips for the Kentucky Real Estate Exam

Kentucky's exam uses the term "sales associate" not "salesperson" — know this terminology. The 60-day application window after passing is one of the most tested Kentucky-specific facts. Also note that the exam questions are intermixed — national and state questions are not presented in separate labeled sections, so you must know both thoroughly and can't easily skip one type.

Kentucky requires a 75% passing score (higher than many states), and if you fail one section you have only 4 months to retake it. Study KREC's rules on advertising, trust accounts, and broker supervision carefully — these are high-frequency topics on the state section. Kentucky also has specific rules about the company license separate from the individual broker license.
